What Should I Do?
After any kind of loss, it is natural for a person to start to clean a building, or a home and the contents. (Please see Safety First). It is also true that incorrect or delayed action can jeopardize or seriously impede satisfactory restoration.
For example, in the case of a fire, you should open windows for ventilation and remove pets (especially birds) to a clean environment. However, did you know that you should not attempt to wipe or wash walls, ceilings or other absorbent surfaces? Special restoration procedures by trained technicians are necessary to successfully clean these surfaces. Also, the chemical makeup of smoke and soot is different. Because these elements are very corrosive, the longer the residue sets on surfaces, the more damage that can occur. So prompt action is needed by professionals to make cleaning easier and to stop damage . . . saving you and your insurance company money.

SAFETY FIRST FOR WATER DAMAGE
Step 1.......
Make sure to protect yourself against electrical hazards. Unplug receptacles, extension cords, appliances, etc.
Step 2 .......
Take baggies and put under all wood furniture. More carpets have been ruined by furniture stains than water. If the furniture is too big, then take wood blocks and put them inside plastic bags, then slide these under both ends of the large item. Be careful not to hurt yourself when lifting.
Step 3 .......
If possible, remove small wood furniture like chairs, magazine racks, etc.
Step 4 .......
If the area has long drapes, you will need to place the bottom half inside plastic bags. Don't worry about taking them down at this time.
Step 5 .......
Remove all paper products from the area.
